Artist Statement
In my work, I explore and process identity, sexuality, empathy, and most importantly, belief. My work often deals with complicated emotions, depicted as the surreal, the magical, the mythical, and the divine. My work is frequently mixed-medium with texture as the highest priority. Inspired by magical realism, I most frequently create mixed-medium acrylic paintings featuring unfamiliar animals and creatures set in landscapes that are grounded yet hold a surreal quality to them. Having spent much of my academic career focused in ceramics, I often incorporate shallow relief and small sculptural elements into my paintings. Through my work, I seek to depict specific ineffable emotions and uncomfortable thoughts with curiosity and compassion.
